A Festival Full of Sights and Sounds

Every corner of the 2007 Oyster Festival will be full of exciting activities and entertainment for the entire family. Attendees will find a bounty of quality arts & crafts products, children’s activities, live musical performances, amusement rides, a miniature railroad exhibit, harbor cruises, antiques and much more.

On Saturday and Sunday, experience music from the Andes with the Native American group, Runa Pacha Wind Rhythms. Comprised of Navajo and Inca descendants, the group performs beautiful, soothing music on traditional instruments such as pan flutes, cedar flutes, charangos, llama & gourd rattles, ocarinas, rainsticks, eagle bone whistles, drums covered with elk skin and sheepskin and chagchas (rattles) made with deer hooves. They’ll be on Audrey Avenue Saturday and on the Verizon West End Avenue Stage on Sunday.

On Saturday, take part in the New York Lottery’s, Deal or No Deal Show, featuring the new instant game of the same name! Festival attendees are invited to stop by the Verizon West End Avenue Stage to play a live version of the New York Lottery’s “Deal or No Deal” instant game for prizes.

Also on Saturday, see the 24th Annual Oyster Eating and Shucking Contest at 2 PM. Hosted by Q104’s Bob Buchmann, the contest has drawn media interest from as far away as Japan and Hong Kong. Sponsored by Newton Shows, with the oysters provided by Frank M. Flowers & Sons, this crowd favorite will be at the Verizon West End Avenue Stage.

Fan favorite Fred Greenspan, a traditional puppeteer, will be making his first-ever appearance at the Oyster Festival on Sunday. Fred is a well-known Punch & Judy puppeteer and has performed all over the United States with his adaptations of traditional puppet shows. See Fred at the Verizon West End Avenue Stage.

All weekend, take the “trackless train” from lower Audrey Avenue to the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum, where you’ll find an N-scale display wonderland. Speak with one of the conductors and learn about the history of trains.

  Just for Kids!

The Oyster Festival is a family-friendly festival—with lots to do for adults and kids. Stroll along the waterfront…you’ll be amazed what you’ll find.

Optimum Presents Safari at the Waterfront
If you’ve been looking forward to bringing your youngsters to the Petting Zoo, you’ll be happy to hear this year’s menagerie includes llamas, kangaroos, camels and other four-legged friends. Certified veterinarians will be on hand to keep careful watch. Sponsored by Optimum, we’ve brought in the phenomenal R.W. Commerford Zoo as a free attraction for the whole family.

Camel Ride Anyone?
Ever wonder what it’s like a board one of these fascinating creatures? Well, now is your chance. Camels too exotic for you? The festival will also be offering pony rides. There will be a small fee for the rides.

Amusements, Thrill Rides & Game Midway
What’s a festival without rides? Newton & Sons provides the midway, as they have for many years. The attractions are fun and exciting! These attractions have provided safe fun for more than 40 years. A wide assortment of rides for children of all ages will be on hand, along with an array of fun sideshow games with great prizes.

“Punch ’n Judy” Shows—Sunday Only
Nationally recognized puppeteer Fred Greenspan will be the highlight on Sunday afternoon at the Verizon West End Avenue Stage. Dressing in period costume, he provides an historic overview before each show. His performances can be seen at museums, libraries, schools, fairs and special events of all kinds. Fred maintains the rascally nature of Punch without the stick slapping normally found in these shows but includes many of the traditional routines.

Yo-Ho Ho—the Pirates Are Back!
Ahoy! Those fun-loving pirates, the “Kings of the Coast,” are still looking for buried treasure! Stop by their encampment, where children can hone their treasure-hunting skills. Watch their story unfold and hunt for the treasure with them! Sponsored this year by Cablevision, they’ll be on the beach at Theodore Roosevelt Park.

“All My Children” star Jeff Branson
Verizon and SOAPnet are teaming up to bring “All My Children” star Jeff Branson to the Oyster Festival on Saturday, October 13 from 2 to 3 PM. The daytime heartthrob, who plays reformed bad boy Jonathan Lavery on the popular daytime drama, will sign autographs and pose for pictures in the Verizon/SOAPnet Beauty Lounge. Fans will also be able to enjoy free manicures, massages and chances to win great SOAPnet prizes.

The Verizon/SOAPnet Beauty Lounge will be located in the carnival area at the Oyster Bay waterfront.

Sand Art & Face Painting
Let the artists in your little ones come out as they create their own sand art. Face painting, jewelry making and a host of other actives will be available in the children’s activity area at the waterfront.

Railroad Museum
Kids can take the “trackless train” at the gazebo on Audrey Avenue down Lower Audrey to the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum, where you’ll find an “N-Scale” display wonderland. Speak with one of the conductors and learn about the history of trains.
